Don’t Put Your Workout on a Summer Break

As summer approaches, many people tend to treat exercise like school: “The season’s over—time for a break.” And just like that, when schools close, so do extracurricular activities — not just for kids, but for adults too.

But exercise isn’t a school subject. It doesn’t follow semesters, and it doesn’t take a summer break. It’s a lifelong habit, like brushing your teeth. Just because the weather gets warmer doesn’t mean your body no longer needs care — in fact, it needs it even more to stay energized, balanced, and healthy.

“I’ll just swim instead…”

That’s probably the most common justification I hear every June. People assume that beach days and swims will replace their workout routines. It sounds nice in theory, but in reality? Most end up not swimming much — and not working out either. Without structure and guidance, maintaining movement on your own is harder than it seems. And suddenly, three whole months go by without meaningful physical activity.

What happens to your body when you stop exercising?

Research — and experience — are clear: after just a few inactive weeks, your body starts undoing what you’ve worked hard to build.
    •    Muscle strength and endurance drop significantly
    •    Mobility and flexibility take a hit
    •    Mood and motivation decline, as movement directly affects dopamine and serotonin levels

And the worst part? The longer the break, the harder it is to come back.

Exercise isn’t a program. It’s a mindset.

Students of mine who decided to “take the summer off” often return in September feeling stuck — not only physically, but also mentally. It’s not just fitness they’ve lost, it’s the habit of movement. And that’s always the hardest to regain.

But this isn’t about pressure or guilt. It’s about gently integrating exercise into your summer rhythm — with flexibility, creativity, and kindness to your body.

How to stay active during summer:
    •    Take advantage of longer daylight for early or evening movement
    •    Try something new: Aqua Pilates, beach workouts, balcony exercises
    •    Stay connected to your trainer or your group — structure makes all the difference
    •    Remember: a little, done consistently, beats doing nothing at all

Summer is beautiful — but it feels even better when your body feels strong, open, and awake.
